🌴 Tips from the Locals to Make the Most of Your Stay in Trinidad, Cuba
Trinidad, my people, is a place that steals your heart from the moment you arrive. If you’re here or planning to visit, I’ve got some insider tips from real trinitarians (you know, the ones who really know how to live here!) to make your experience truly special. Forget about the usual tourist routes and get ready to experience the authentic Trinidad. Let’s go!
🗺️ 1. Explore Beyond the Historic Center
Sure, the Plaza Mayor is beautiful, but don’t just stay there. The magic of Trinidad is hidden in its lesser-known corners, in the streets that don’t make it into the tourist guides. Here, life goes on at its own pace, and if you wander into the less crowded neighborhoods, you’ll get to experience the true soul of the city. The people here are so friendly, they might even offer you a coffee! 🌿
Imagine this: as you walk through the neighborhoods, you’ll hear the grandmothers chatting on their doorsteps, kids playing baseball in the streets, and the sound of salsa hips swaying at every corner. If you bump into someone, don’t hesitate to ask about the city’s history or where you can grab a good meal—locals always have a secret recommendation that you won’t find in any blog! 🤗
🚶♀️ 2. Wear Comfortable Shoes
Trust me on this one: you’re not going to walk around Trinidad much if you don’t have the right shoes. The cobbled streets may look charming, but they’ll definitely test your legs. If you’re a walker, wear something comfortable! And if you’re one of those people who can’t live without heels, get ready for some tired feet. 🦶
But here’s the good part: Trinidad’s streets are perfect for getting lost, so every step is a new adventure. You can check out the main area in a few hours, and then, if you’re up for it, head out to explore the outskirts. 🌄 Make sure to bring some sunscreen and a water bottle because the Cuban heat is present year-round! 😎
🌐 3. Get Ready to Disconnect
Cuba is paradise, but if you come expecting to be connected all the time, you’ll be in for a surprise. The internet here isn’t as easy to get as in other countries. So, forget about being glued to your phone all day! 🤳
That said, you can buy an ETECSA card to access Wi-Fi, but don’t expect miracles. The connection can be a bit slow, and sometimes, you’ll have to hunt down a good spot with signal, like the Plaza Mayor. But listen, I’m telling you from the heart: disconnecting from technology and connecting with people and nature is the best part of being in Trinidad. 🚫📱
If you need to get around, download offline maps like Maps.me to make sure you don’t get lost in those charming streets. 🌍
🥘 4. Enjoy the Local Cuisine
Cuba has a unique flavor, and in Trinidad, you’ll feel it even more! If you’re a foodie, you’ve gotta try picadillo, ropa vieja, and the delicious tostones. I recommend you don’t stick to the touristy restaurants—look for the local paladares! They’re much cheaper and the food is amazing.
Some of the more famous spots here, like La Redacción, not only serve up tasty dishes, but they also give you a taste of our culture. And if you want to become part of the Cuban kitchen, I highly recommend taking a cooking class at one of the local spots! That way, you’ll learn how to prepare our dishes and take a piece of Cuba with you. 🍽️
🚲 5. Rent a Bike, But Be Cautious
Let me tell you, the plan to cycle around Trinidad can be a lot of fun, but you’ve gotta be ready. The bikes here are a bit old, so if you decide to rent one, make sure it’s in good condition. 🏞️
Now, if you do decide to ride around, you’ll love the scenery, but don’t get too cocky. The return from Playa Ancón is uphill, and if you’re not used to cycling, you’ll get tired fast! 😂 But hey, it’s all part of the charm, right? Otherwise, a car rental or a “coco-taxi” is a good alternative if you don’t want to deal with the heat. 🚗
🎶 6. Live the Live Music
If there’s one thing that defines Trinidad, it’s its music. Salsa, son, and Cuban tunes are in the air, the plazas, the houses… everywhere! 🎺 If you like music, you can’t miss Casa de la Música. Make sure to pass by one night. Local musicians will have you dancing until the morning. 🕺
Remember, even though there are other touristy places, the magic of Trinidad is in its streets, those spontaneous concerts, and the starry nights that make you feel like everyone’s dancing and singing with you. 🌙
🌄 7. Explore the Surrounding Nature
If you think Trinidad is just about the historic center, think again! The surroundings are a natural wonder. If you’re into hiking, I recommend heading to Topes de Collantes. Here, you’ll find waterfalls, green trails, and panoramic views that are simply breathtaking. 🌳
You can also visit Parque Guanayara if you want to immerse yourself in nature. Just make sure to bring some mosquito repellent and good hiking boots. Get ready to witness one of the best natural experiences Cuba has to offer! 🌄
💡 8. Know About the Local Currency
Cuba’s currency is something that often confuses people, and it’s no surprise! 😅 Here we use the Cuban Peso (CUP), but tourists usually pay in dollars or CUC. My advice: if you can, exchange your money for pesos in a casa de cambio or directly with your hosts.
Paying with CUP is cheaper than paying with dollars, and although the exchange process isn’t as simple as in other countries, with a bit of patience, you’ll make your money go further. 🤑
🛍️ 9. Bargain with Kindness
Like to shop? Then get ready to bargain, but do it with kindness. When you visit the markets, craft stalls, or even restaurants, it’s normal for the prices to be a bit higher for tourists. However, you can always negotiate, and if you do it with a friendly attitude, you’ll likely get a good deal. 💸
And the most important thing: always keep a relaxed and friendly vibe because, at the end of the day, what matters most is the good Cuban atmosphere. 😊
🚖 10. Use Local Transportation
To get around Trinidad, you’ve got a few transport options. Taxis are quite affordable, especially the famous yellow coco-taxis. They’re fun and cheap! If you don’t feel like walking too much, just hop in one of these little guys and enjoy the ride. 🚕
For those who love a more traditional Cuban experience, you can also go for a horse-drawn carriage. They’re super charming and a great way to see the city without any rush.
With these tips in hand, you’re ready to explore the magical city of Trinidad like a true local. Enjoy your stay, and don’t forget to embrace the rhythm of this place—Cuba’s warmth will always be here, waiting for you. 🌞🎶
